Tree Removal in Rockford, IL — Done Right, Done Safely

Tree removal is one of the most technical jobs in arboriculture — and one of the most dangerous when it's done wrong. At Tree Care Enterprises, every removal is led by an ISA Certified Arborist and carried out by a trained crew using aerial rigging, cranes when needed, and strict ANSI A300 safety standards. We've been doing this in Rockford since 1978.

We don't remove trees carelessly or unnecessarily. Our certified arborists assess every tree first — looking at structural integrity, disease progression, proximity to structures, and root stability — before recommending removal. When a tree can be saved, we say so. When it can't, we tell you why and handle the job from assessment through final cleanup.

When Does a Tree Need to Come Down?

Not every declining tree needs to be removed, but some situations leave no safe alternative. Our arborists look for:

  • Structural failure risk: Severe lean, co-dominant stems, cracked trunks, or root damage that makes the tree a hazard to structures or people.
  • Advanced disease or decay: Internal rot, fungal conks at the base, or extensive dead wood that compromises the tree's ability to stand safely.
  • Storm damage: Rockford winters bring ice storms and high winds that can split large limbs or uproot entire trees — especially in older neighborhoods with mature silver maples and cottonwoods.
  • Emerald Ash Borer: Ash trees killed by EAB become brittle within two to three years of death. A dead ash is one of the most dangerous trees to remove — the wood is unpredictable and requires specialized technique. Our arborists are experienced with EAB removal throughout Winnebago County.
  • Construction or development: Removing trees for additions, driveways, or site clearing, with preservation of neighboring trees wherever possible.
  • Overcrowding: Selective removal to improve light, airflow, and health for the trees worth keeping.

What Sets TCE's Removal Crews Apart

TCIA Accreditation. Tree Care Enterprises is one of a small number of Illinois companies to hold TCIA Accreditation — a rigorous third-party audit of our safety programs, equipment, and business practices. TCI Magazine named us one of the nation's Top 20 Tree Care Companies.

ISA Certified Arborists on every job. We have five ISA Certified Arborists on staff — John Richards (IL-0027A), Doug Edwards (IL-0505A), Matt Richards (IL-9831A), Jeremy Montana (IL-4690A), and Pete Montana (IL-4689A). Your job is assessed and overseen by a certified arborist from start to finish.

Large-tree capability. We regularly handle canopy trees — 80-foot oaks, silver maples over structures, large cottonwoods in tight spaces — using aerial rigging and directional felling techniques that protect your property. We also work with crane services on complex removals where rigging alone isn't sufficient.

Fully licensed and insured. We carry full liability insurance and workers' compensation. Before any crew sets foot on your property, you're protected.

Our Tree Removal Process

1. On-site assessment. A certified arborist visits, evaluates the tree, identifies hazards, and discusses your options. We explore preservation first — if the tree can be saved with cabling, pruning, or treatment, we'll tell you. If removal is the right call, we give you a clear explanation and a written estimate.

2. Site preparation. We lay down ground protection, establish safety zones, and position equipment to minimize impact on your lawn, garden beds, and surrounding trees.

3. Removal. Depending on the tree's location and condition, we use climbing and aerial rigging, bucket trucks, or directional felling. Limbs are lowered in sections; we don't drop wood on your property.

4. Stump grinding. We grind stumps to below grade — standard on most jobs or available as an add-on. This eliminates regrowth and trip hazards and lets you replant or restore lawn over the area.

5. Full cleanup. All debris, chips, and wood are hauled or chipped on-site. We rake and blow the area before leaving.

When to Consider Tree Removal

While we prioritize tree preservation, there are situations where removal becomes necessary to protect your property and ensure safety:

  • Dead or Dying Trees: These pose significant risks to people, property, and surrounding vegetation.
  • Diseased Trees: Trees suffering from severe diseases that could spread to healthy trees in your landscape.
  • Storm Damage: Trees that are damaged beyond repair by storms and high winds.
  • Overgrown Trees: Trees that have outgrown their space, threatening nearby structures, power lines, or other trees.

At Tree Care Enterprises, we focus on responsible tree preservation and removal. Our expert team ensures the safety, health, and beauty of your property. Contact us today to learn more about our services and how we can help maintain your landscape!

Common questions

Before you book a tree job

How fast can you respond to a tree emergency?

Our 24/7 emergency line at 815-742-5689 routes directly to dispatch — not voicemail. For active hazards (a tree on a structure, blocking access, or threatening power lines), a crew can typically be on site the same day.

Are your arborists ISA Certified?

Yes. Tree Care Enterprises employs seven ISA Certified Arborists. Every job is overseen by a credentialed arborist, not just a crew foreman.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Tree Care Enterprises carries full general liability and workers' compensation insurance, holds TCIA Accreditation, and our arborists are ISA Certified. Certificate of insurance available on request.

Do you provide free estimates?

Yes. An ISA Certified Arborist visits your property, walks the trees with you, and emails a written, itemized estimate — typically the same day. No charge, no obligation.

How much does tree removal cost?

Cost depends on the tree's size, location, condition, and access. Small ornamentals can start around a few hundred dollars; large hazardous removals near structures or power lines cost considerably more. Every estimate is free, written, and itemized — no surprises.

Can you treat ash trees for Emerald Ash Borer?

Yes. We offer trunk injection and systemic EAB treatments for ash trees that still have viable canopy (typically less than 30–50% dieback). Early treatment is significantly less expensive than removing a large, dead ash later.

What areas do you serve?

Tree Care Enterprises serves the Stateline area — Winnebago, Boone, and parts of DeKalb counties in northern Illinois, plus Walworth and Rock counties in southern Wisconsin. Call us if you're not sure you're in our service area; if you're close, we'll be there.

Will my trees actually be saved, or do you just remove them?

We're arborists first — pruning, cabling, fertilization, and disease treatment come before removal whenever the tree is healthy enough to save. Removal is the recommendation only when a tree is dead, structurally unsound, or genuinely hazardous.
